Quality Improvement in an Era of Accountability

The U.S. healthcare system is undergoing monumental changes. We have entered the "Era of Accountability" with the advent of "pay for performance" experiments, “accountable care organizations,” and the call for "value-based care."

Driving this change is the dramatic escalation in total healthcare spending with poor health outcomes compared to other countries, the large variability in cost and care with no apparent benefits, and the large disparities in health outcomes experienced by various populations.

In January 2012, the DentaQuest Institute and the W.K. Kellogg Foundation hosted leaders in the dental profession, dental education, medicine, government, financing, philanthropy, quality improvement, and consumer advocacy for a dialogue on utilizing a quality improvement framework for ensuring that all people in the United States have access to quality oral health care.

Dr. Paul Glassman DDS, MA, MBA, Professor of Dental Practice, Director of Community Oral Health, and Director of the Pacific Center for Special Care at University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry, provided a brief overview of the key findings and themes of a new multi-contributor report entitled, Oral Health Quality Improvement in an Era of Accountability.
