The Emergency Department is No Place for Dental Care

Natalia Chalmers, DDS, PhD; Jane Grover, DDS, MPH; Vince Ford

For a growing number of Americans, hospital emergency departments (ED) have become the first line of treatment for dental care. This increasing use of ED for routine or preventable dental conditions is costing the healthcare system over $1.5 billion per year, an escalating concern for health-care policymakers. These costs are overwhelmingly billed to Medicaid or those without health insurance. Young adults and African Americans have the highest rates of ED visits for dental conditions. Treatment received in the ED is often palliative and ineffective, and the majority of patients return to the ED. Participants will learn about national and state trends in ED utilization for oral health care needs, with a focus on repeat visits and disparities. Policy solutions to these issues will also be discussed, including models for successful referral programs.
