The DentaQuest Institute's MORE Care (Medical Oral Expanded Care) program is spreading its medical/dental integration work into Colorado in 2016. MORE Care began at the end of 2014 with the establishment of a prototype collaborative that works with 6 primary care practices in rural South Carolina in partnership with the South Carolina Office of Rural Health and the Medical University of South Carolina. Throughout 2015 and early 2016, the MORE Care team worked to develop a model for transforming rural primary care practices to provide oral health risk assessments, oral exams, fluoride varnish and referrals to dental partners for those needing further dental treatment.
Based upon the experience gleaned in South Carolina, the MORE Care team will enter Colorado with a further refined model to test and develop in this new state. DQI's key partner in Colorado is the Colorado Rural Health Center, who will work with DQI to identify and engage up to 5 rural primary care practices throughout the state.
The Colorado MORE Care initiative will be guided by not only the Colorado Rural Health Center and DQI, but also by the expertise of a large pool of local and national partners, including a Colorado-based advisory group, a national advisory group, and champions from South Carolina. Rural primary care teams in Colorado are expected to be selected this spring, with work beginning over the summer.
