Dr. Mark Doherty was named Executive Director of the DentaQuest Institute’s Safety Net Solutions (SNS) program in 2005. In this role, Dr. Doherty provides oversight, leadership and direction for safety net dental practice training and technical assistance consulting projects provided by SNS. Also, in this role, Dr. Doherty represents the DentaQuest Institute presenting to national, regional and local audiences related to Practice Management and Leadership.
Under Dr. Doherty’s direction, the SNS program has grown from a pilot program in three Massachusetts community health centers in 2006 to a national program serving over 550 safety net dental programs in over 46 states in 2018. For nearly 30 years, Dr. Doherty served as the Director of Oral Health Services at the Dorchester House Multi-Service Center, an FQHC in Boston, MA. At the Dot House he built a safety net dental program that included several separate treatment sites, multiple dental providers including several specialty services and with a parafunctional staff of more than 50. He currently also serves as the Chief Dental Officer for the Taunton Oral Health Center, for Trident Oral Health Clinical Services and for Commonwealth Mobile Oral Health Services, all of which provide both fixed and portable oral health care at sites throughout Massachusetts. He has served as a consultant for multiple organizations, including the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, the Massachusetts Department of Youth Services and the University of Massachusetts Medical School. He has appointments at several teaching institutions, including the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, the Boston University School of Dental Medicine, Tufts University Dental School, The Medical University Of South Carolina`s James B. Edwards School of Dental Medicine and at the Lutheran Medical Center. Currently, he also serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) and as the Trustee for the Southeast District Dental Society of the MDS.
Mark has been recognized for his national work with many awards including the National Dental Hero’s Award ;the Dr. Bicuspid, National Practice Management Consultant of the Year Award ; the College of the Holy Cross, Sanctae Crucis Award for Contributions to National Health Care ; the Boston Better Business Bureau, Champions in Health Care Award ; the Massachusetts League Of Community Health Centers, Kathleen Crampton Award for Community Health Service ; the Health Care for All, Signature Award for “Contributions to the Oral Health of the Children of the Commonwealth” ;the National Network for Oral Health Access President’s Award in 2016 and the American Association of Community Dental Program’s John P Rossetti Oral Health Impact Award in 2017.
Dr. Doherty received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and a Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed a residency in general dental practice through the Massachusetts Veterans Administration Hospital and Harvard School of Dental Medicine and was awarded a Master of Public Health degree from Madison University.
