Minor Restorations Decreased after Implementation of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Tax

Presented at the 2024 International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research General Session

This study examined rates of minor restorations before and after the implementation of a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) tax in Philadelphia and Boulder, Colorado. Restorations in Philadelphia increased, while restorations in Boulder decreased following SSB tax implementation. Results suggest that an SSB tax alone does not account for changes in restorative rates.

Implicit Bias Among Dental Professionals: A Scoping Review

Presented at the 2024 International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research General Session

This scoping review evaluated the existence of implicit bias among oral health professionals and the potential impact on patient outcomes. Findings suggest that implicit bias impacts the clinical decision-making of dental professionals, particularly among recommendations for extractions and surgery for oral cancer.

Exploring the Myths and Misconceptions about Oral Health and Pregnancy

Despite the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) longstanding advocacy for routine dental care before and during pregnancy, there’s still a significant disconnect between the awareness and implementation of these recommendations in clinical practice. This gap in care can lead to suboptimal perinatal outcomes and overlooked oral health needs in pregnant patients.

Finding a New Way to Provide Dental Care to Children
