The symposium, "Assessing Oral Health Disparities Through a Nationally Representative Survey," included presentations by Adrianna Sonnek, Rebecca Preston, of the CareQuest Institute for Oral Health. Presenters analyzed findings regarding how oral health disparities affect several underserved and underrepresented sociodemographic groups as demonstrated by data from the nationally representative 2023 State of Oral Health Equity in America survey from CareQuest Institute for Oral Health. The symposium took place on Wednesday, March 15, 2023.
Structural racism and a lack of necessities, such as access to healthy food and adequate housing, have contributed to significant oral health disparities for American Indians and Alaska Natives (AI/AN). While some health outcomes are improving, this white paper ― a collaboration between CareQuest Institute and native-led organizations ― explores the disparities, their causes, and possible solutions.

In this article in The Journal of the American Dental Association, CareQuest Institute researchers found that overall health care costs were reduced in both Medicaid patients (14% less) and commercially insured patients (12% less) with diabetes who had received periodontal treatment within the previous two years.
