Effect of Self-Assembling Peptide P11-4 on Arrest, Cavitation, and Progression of Initial Caries Lesions

Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis 

A systematic review of self-assembling peptide P11-4, a brush-on treatment that uses a remineralization process to regenerate damaged enamel in initial caries lesions, found that the treatment successfully arrested non-cavitated caries lesions and decreased lesion size.

Voices from the Field: Drs. Taiwo Ngo and Kehinde Obeto on the Benefits of Medical-Dental Integration

Taiwo Ngo, DDS, and Kehinde Obeto, MD, have quite a few things in common: They’re both from Lagos, Nigeria. They both moved to Ohio to pursue careers in health care. And they both now provide care for underserved populations in the Toledo area.

They’re also twins with strong family ties to health care.

“While we were in Nigeria, our dad was a pediatrician,” Obeto says. “He’s passed now, but he had his own hospital where I worked part-time before I moved to the States.”

In Need of Treatment: Cost, Inequities, and Our Oral Health System in 2023

For the third consecutive year, CareQuest Institute conducted its annual State of Oral Health Equity in America (SOHEA) survey with 5,260 adults — the largest survey of its kind to study knowledge, attitudes, experiences, and behaviors related to oral health. For the third consecutive year, the findings — for example, nearly 70 million adults in the US don’t have dental insurance — point to a system that is still struggling with disparities and challenges.

But there’s hope, as shown by the many efforts underway to improve access and equity.

Marketwatch: You’re probably brushing your teeth wrong, this dentist says — which has tongues wagging

And plenty of people are paying out-of-pocket: Some 77 million American adults did not have dental insurance last year, according to a survey on inequities in oral health care run by the nonprofit CareQuest Institute for Oral Health.

Impact of COVID-19 on Dental Care Utilization and Oral Health Conditions in the United States

In this journal article, researchers from CareQuest Institute and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine examine the impact of COVID-19 on dental care use and oral health conditions among more than 430,000 patients at Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in 2019 and 2020. Because FQHCs serve more than 28 million patients who are publicly insured or uninsured, live in poverty, or in rural areas, they provide a critical window into the needs of vulnerable populations.

But that help comes with its challenges.

Vaping Post: The Effects of Vaping on Oral Health... What Does Science Tell Us?

In contrast, earlier this year CareQuest Institute for Oral Health®, a non-profit focused on contributing to a better national oral health system, released a report suggesting several oral health risks associated with the use of e-cigarettes.

Among these health risks, says the report, are gum disease, dental decay, bone loss, and hairy tongue. The paper said that medical professionals need to educate their patients about these risks, however it did not compare the relative benefits for users when they switch from smoking cigarettes.

Jacksonville Business Journal: Tim Tebow invests in $5.5 million pediatric dental surgery center

May 22, 2023

Florida is the top state for non-trauma related pediatric emergency room visits, according to the nonprofit CareQuest Institute for Oral Health.

That situation is set to become worse, with 14 million adults across the country -- including 764,199 in Florida -- expected to lose oral health coverage due to states redetermining the eligibility of their Medicaid populations.
