Adult Use of Emergency Departments for Non-Traumatic Dental Conditions: Spotlight on Colorado

Millions of Americans lack access to routine dental care and resort to visiting hospital emergency departments (EDs) for non-traumatic dental conditions (NTDCs). What drives these costly ED visits and who is most likely to make them? A new visual report from CareQuest Institute explores those questions within the state of Colorado.

Dimensions of Dental Hygiene: The Case for a Medicare Dental Benefit

Without dental coverage, older adults are less likely to visit the dentist. According to a recent national survey conducted by CareQuest Institute for Oral Health, 16% of adults who reported they were without dental insurance had not seen a dentist in more than 5 years. This is more than 10% higher than the number of respondents with dental insurance who had not seen a dentist. Further, 40% of adults lacking dental insurance who had not seen a dentist in the past 2 years identified cost as the reason.

Estimation of Oral Disease Burden from Claims and Self-Reported Data

Claims data can be used to estimate burden of dental disease for a population who receives dental care, according to researchers from CareQuest Institute and Marquette University School of Dentistry in an article in the Journal of Public Health Dentistry.  

Typically, oral disease burden is estimated through epidemiological surveys, which can be costly and time-consuming. In this study, researchers compared Medicaid and commercial claims data with survey data to estimate burden of oral disease.
